The largest recognized impact basin in the solar system, Utopia Planitia<\/strong> features a crater that stretches about 3,300 km across Mars’ northern plains. Because the impact occurred early in Mars’ history, Utopia has at one time hosted an ancient ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After detecting large deposits of subsurface water ice beneath the impact basin, in this part of Mars, several deposits were discovered for the ice extraction and processing into drinking and industrial water to provide local colonies. <\/strong>It’s estimated as much water as the volume of Lake Superior may lie in deposits located 1 to 10 meters below the surface. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
